So everybody who cares – SEOs exclusively, (as evidenced by a recent survey we did amongst friends and colleagues) and not even all of them, are probably aware by now there’s been a Google Toolbar PR export.
We did ok, main site up to 4 which is about what we thought, and main & satellite blogs up to 3. We’re happy enough with that in 6 months as we arent chasing PR anyway, and the site is ranking up there with the likes of SEOMoz now in some reasonably heavyweight searches.

Unlike most these days, we do still think that in the absence of anything else to go on, toolbar PR is better than nothing, and is at least generally a reflection of where you were a little while ago.
But this latest update seems a bit strange in a number of ways. The forums are alive with people reporting spectacular gains, 0-4 in 3 weeks, along with some fairly good losses in places too.
Big losses are more easily explained though, and could be due to any number of factors we have no understanding of, from devaluing paid links further upline, through to pages that link to you dropping into the supplemental index and hence you losing that linkjuice.
Its a bit more difficult to understand how you can get a sudden large raise, and especially so when you dont seem to have sufficient linkstrength.
We would now like to introduce exhibit (a) a good friend’s site, www.kdotonline.com which is now showing PR5 since Tuesday night, with a grand total of six links to it. (we havent started on it yet)
Theres also another new site that gained a PR4 which we think should be more like a 2.
This is clearly not right. ..So what are we to believe here? ..Across the board our sites mostly went up one or two points and we would like to believe that they deserved it, but to be honest we suspect theres something a bit suspect about it all, and maybe Google are just toying with the clamouring masses obsessing over their little green bars.
We are hereby declaring mistrust over the levels toolbar PR is currently at and expect big corrections at some point.
We’ll leave you with the thoughts of a very funny chap in a forum somewhere (forgotten who/ where, and will credit as and when I find it again) who said..
“I have taken to manually correcting the error on my Google toolbar with a green marker pen”
